The OSC Marine Group is recognized for project excellence in Cape Town desalination project.

BACKGROUND

In 2018, The OSC Marine Group – Tag Diving division – joined forces with Stefanutti Stocks Civils to bring Cape Town one of its first desalination plants, situated in Strandfontein, near Muizenberg.  Reeling from the on-going drought in the Western Cape, and anxiety-inducing lack of rainfall, all Cape Town could talk about was ‘How many litres of water I used in my 90 second shower last night’ and ‘My grey water gets recycled 4 times before finally being lovingly spread over the veggie garden.” A solution was needed urgently.

HOW THE TEAM DID IT

PROJECT SUCCESSFUL

Following the successful conclusion of the building of the plant (Stefanutti Stocks Civils), and establishment and securing of two 300m lengths of intake and discharge pipelines amidst harsh coastal conditions (OSC Marine Group), the Sea Water Reverse Osmosis plant was ready to start delivering 7 Megalitres of water to the Cape Town residents within a record 3.5 months.

ACHIEVING AWARDS

This achievement was recognised by the South African Institute of Civil Engineers (SAICE) during both their Western Cape regional awards ceremony (held at Kelvin Grove in Kenilworth in May 2018), and the SAICE National Awards ceremony, held at the Southern Sun in Cape Town CBD, in October 2018.

The Strandfontein Desalination Project won the following awards:

  • 2018 Best Project Award for SAICE Western Cape.
  • 2018 Technical Excellence Award for SAICE Western Cape.
  • 2018 Most Outstanding Civil Engineering Project for Marine Engineering.(1)
  • 2018 Highly Commended Award for Technical Excellence at SAICE National level.

SAICE remarks on the Marine Engineering Division Award:

“This project was undertaken within an extremely constrained programme requiring close collaboration between the client, design engineers and contractors.  The successful implementation of this in the face of significant technical, environmental and social challenges is considered to be a great example of the skills, passion and determination inherent to South African civil engineers.”
